演講摘要:

Emily Dickinson wrote almost 1800 poems, none of which she saw into print during her lifetime (although ten were submitted to newspapers by friends and printed). This presentation will introduce listeners to the kinds of manuscripts Emily Dickinson left behind at her death and ways that I will be transcribing and annotating them in my new reader's edition of Dickinson's complete poems (forthcoming from Harvard University Press in 2016). It will deal with basic patterns in the ways Dickinson copied and retained her poems during different periods of her life; the role of poems she circulated in relation to those she retained; and with current debates about editorial theory and about understanding the patterns of Dickinson's handwritten manuscripts. This lecture will also talk about why a print edition of Dickinson's poems seems useful at this point in time, given the now free and open access to images of all Dickinson's manuscripts (in the Emily Dickinson Archive at edickinson.org) and will conclude by commenting briefly on my sense of why Dickinson chose not to publish the several hundred poems she was so carefully recording.
